Reading at St Michael’s

Here are some of the lovely things we do at our school…

  • We have reading assemblies in year groups once a week to enjoy quality texts together.
  • Children are encouraged to share books they are reading with regular ‘book flashes’ in assemblies.
  • Every class has a set of books that they read regularly together. There are enough books for every child to have one.
  • Guided reading sessions happen daily and we have lots of lovely sets of books in school for this. During this time we encourage reading for pleasure alongside comprehension.
  • Poetry is shared and enjoyed across the school.
  • The Read Write Inc program is established to help children that are still learning to read. This focuses on phonics.
  • Regular book fairs after school are organised and these are run with the help of the children.
  • In March we celebrate Book Week and dress up as our favourite characters.
  • Reading outside of school time is encouraged…

Our reading challenge gives children the chance to collect apples and leaves for reading often.

10 times = Green leaf

25 times = Apple

50 times = Gold leaf

Writing at St Michael’s

Here are some of the lovely things we do at our school…

  • We use Talk for Writing. This allows children to learn a text that they can imitate, innovate and invent.
  • Within English sessions all groups follow a teaching sequence of: Poetry – Fiction – Non-fiction
  • Creative writing sessions happen every Friday. This is an extended writing session.
  • A range of writing takes place across the curriculum.
  • Writing competitions are entered. Much of the children’s work has been published by ‘Young Writers’.
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling is taught through writing and is a high priority.
  • Handwriting is practised during morning work, with some groups of children receiving extra support at other times.

Spelling at St Michael’s

Here are some of the lovely things we do at our school…

  • Spelling is taught through English sessions.       Spelling rules, key words and National Curriculum statutory spellings are learnt in these lessons.
  • Children have differentiated weekly spelling lists which they take home.
  • Weekly spellings are practised in three ways; look, cover, write and check, handwriting and by putting them into sentences (this helps the children understand their meaning too).
  • Statutory spellings are set as an extra challenge every half term. Children who put great effort into this are rewarded with a special certificate.
  • Dyslexia friendly spellings are available to those children that need extra support.
  • During Book Week we have a Spelling Bee. This is a highly anticipated event and lots of fun dressed as book characters.
  • Lots of support is available in classrooms which are well equipped with dictionaries, word lists and electronic spell checkers.

We follow the new Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for English.
